Distressed by rape, woman ends life in Kalahandi

Bhubaneswar, May 21: On Monday night, a woman allegedly committed suicide after being raped by her brother-in-law in Jamchua village, under the Jaipatna police jurisdiction in Kalahandi district.
Sources report that the victim had been living alone in Tingapakhan after her husband left to work as a migrant laborer in a neighboring state. On April 22, taking advantage of her isolation, her brother-in-law raped her and threatened her to keep silent.
Following the assault, the woman moved to Jamchua village to stay with her family. Unable to cope with the trauma, she consumed poison and died. Jaipatna police responded to the scene and seized the body, according to sources.
The victim’s family has filed a complaint demanding immediate action against the accused.
Local Samiti Sabhya member Pitambar Harijan stated, “I arrived at the scene upon hearing of the suicide. The woman had been living with her family since the incident. Her brother-in-law raped her in a forest, which left her deeply disturbed. She was scheduled for a medical examination today, but tragically, she took her own life by consuming poison last night.”
