Accountant arrested by EOW in Bhubaneswar for Rs 2.63 crore fraud

Bhubaneswar, May 9: The Economic Offences Wing in Bhubaneswar has apprehended Saroj Kumar Mohanty for his involvement in defrauding a company in Odisha. Mohanty, although arrested in Bhubaneswar, hails from Jagatsinghpur, as per reports.
Scheduled for today, Mohanty will face court proceedings under the OPID Act in Cuttack. The allegations stem from a complaint lodged by Biswajit Bhuyan, the Managing Director of the affected company, against Mohanty, who served as the company's Accountant. The accusation specifies a defrauding amount of Rs. 2.63 crore through the fabrication of documents.
Investigations revealed Mohanty's tenure as the company's Accountant from 2006 to 2008, during which he was responsible for financial and accounting tasks. Beyond overseeing financial dealings with banks, he managed transactions, tax affairs, and financial statements.
Further scrutiny exposed Mohanty's fraudulent activities between the fiscal years 2015-16 to 2017-18, wherein he manipulated documents, including request letters to banks and unauthorized transactions, resulting in the misappropriation of company funds.
Mohanty exploited company procedures, misusing signed RTGS forms and cheques intended for payments to parties. By altering payment instructions and forging signatures, he diverted funds into multiple accounts, including his personal one.
Additionally, Mohanty illicitly withdrew payments owed to parties, substituting them with lesser amounts via bank instruments, followed by deposits into the parties' accounts.
