Rubella alert: Two children test positive in Nabarangpur, health dept on high alert

Bhubaneswar, May 8: The resurgence of rubella disease has raised concerns in Nabarangpur district, as two children have tested positive for the illness.
Confirming the outbreak, the district health department disclosed that samples were collected from five affected individuals on April 29, resulting in two positive cases for rubella.
Chief District Medical Officer In-charge Malaya Tripathy emphasized the vulnerability of pregnant women, stating, "Five individuals from Padalguda village, Nandahandi block, exhibited symptoms of rubella. Among them, two tested positive. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as rubella-positive cases may lead to birth complications such as heart diseases, cataracts, and mental disorders."
ASHA workers are actively raising awareness in affected areas, and both a World Health Organization (WHO) team and local medical personnel have assessed the situation in Padalguda village. Precautionary measures include isolating the two rubella-positive children due to the airborne transmission of the disease through sneezing or coughing.
Health Director Bijay Mohapatra noted that two blocks in Nabarangpur have reported cases of fever with rashes, indicating potential rubella spread. Although initial Scrub typhus tests were negative, health teams remain vigilant. Samples have been dispatched to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for further examination.
