Odisha weather update: IMD alerts fishermen, predicts thunderstorms across 19 districts

Bhubaneswar, May 7: The regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning advising fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea for the next three days in Odisha due to the presence of swell waves caused by Kalbaisakhi.
The IMD alerted fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution, highlighting the possibility of intermittent surging waves, particularly in low-lying areas and during high tide/spring tide phases.
They recommended that small vessels operate nearshore with vigilance, ensuring boats maintain a safe distance from each other to prevent collisions and damage. Operational and recreational activities near beaches are advised to proceed with care.
In addition, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecasted thunderstorms and rainfall across 19 districts of Odisha today due to the Kalbaisakhi effect. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 KMPH are expected in select areas.
This weather pattern is anticipated to persist for the next four to five days. Yesterday, temperatures soared to 43 degrees Celsius and above in 12 locations across Odisha, with Titilagarh recording the highest temperature at 45°C.
