Debt dispute escalates: Odisha man allegedly burns shop over Rs 130 bill

Bhubaneswar, April 24: The Commissionerate Police in Odisha's capital detained an individual today for allegedly setting fire to a grocery shop in the Chandaka area of the city last night.
The suspect, identified as Sadasiba Swain (35), son of Krushna Chandra Swain from Madhupur under Chandaka police jurisdiction, stands accused in the incident. According to reports, Sadasiba had procured grocery items on credit from the shop owned by Ranjit Kumar Sahoo, amounting to approximately Rs 130 a few days prior.
Allegedly, when Ranjit requested payment yesterday, Sadasiba issued threats of dire consequences. Subsequently, at around 11:30 pm last night, Sadasiba purportedly ignited Ranjit's grocery shop while Ranjit was inside.
Although Ranjit managed to escape unharmed, the fire ravaged his shop, resulting in losses exceeding Rs 1 lakh.
Following a complaint lodged by Ranjit with the Chandaka police, authorities acted swiftly, arresting Sadasiba and initiating legal proceedings under Sections 436, 307, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
