Dutch tourist Anthony van Arkel to finally depart Puri after theft ordeal

Puri, March 14: Anthony van Arkel, the Dutch tourist stranded in Puri following a theft incident by a taxi driver, is set to return home on Friday. His journey commences today as he departs Puri for Nagpur, from where he will catch an early morning flight to The Netherlands.
The Puri district administration has facilitated all necessary arrangements for Anthony's safe journey back home. Additionally, assurances have been provided that his stolen belongings will be dispatched to The Netherlands via courier.
Meanwhile, the culprit responsible for the theft, identified as Sagar Mallik, has been apprehended by the authorities and is currently undergoing interrogation.
Anthony's ordeal began in January when he fell victim to the theft perpetrated by the taxi driver, resulting in the loss of cash amounting to Rs 6 lakh, a diamond ring, and his camera. Despite being left penniless, Anthony reported the incident to the police, leading to subsequent assistance from the district administration, which arranged his accommodation at Niladri Nilay, a local shelter home.
The plight of Anthony garnered public attention after he reached out to the media to recount his harrowing experience. In response to his plea for improved accommodations, along with ensuring the arrest of the thief and facilitating his repatriation, the district administration collaborated with the Dutch embassy in India and arranged lodging at OTDC Pantha Nivas.
Expressing gratitude before departing Puri, Anthony extended heartfelt thanks to the people of Puri and the district administration for their invaluable assistance and support throughout his ordeal.
