IMD warns of heat wave: Odisha braces for soaring temperatures

Bhubaneswar, March 6: The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on Wednesday, forecasting a significant rise in daytime (maximum) temperatures across Odisha over the next week. Temperatures are expected to soar by 3°C to 5°C above normal, potentially disrupting normal life in the state.
Currently, Odisha is in the grip of a heat wave, with daytime temperatures exceeding 37°C in various areas. Paralakhemundi registered the highest temperature in the state at 38.2°C, indicating a trend toward temperatures reaching 40°C in the near future.
Despite the prevailing heat, a depression has formed along the coastal regions of Odisha due to western disturbances. Consequently, some areas are anticipated to receive light to moderate rainfall in the coming days. The weather office has forecasted such precipitation, particularly in certain districts of coastal Odisha and north interior Odisha.
Areas including Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj are expected to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers today. In districts receiving rainfall, daytime temperatures are likely to be below normal. However, the remaining districts will experience dry weather, with temperatures rising by 2°C to 3°C above normal.
Looking ahead, the MeT predicts substantial rainfall in several districts on Saturday. However, from early next week, dry weather is expected to return, accompanied by soaring temperatures nearing 40°C. Coastal and interior Odisha, in particular, may witness a temperature increase of 3°C to 5°C above normal.
