Odisha fishermen stage massive protest in Bhubaneswar, demand diesel subsidy

Bhubaneswar, Feb 27: In a show of unity, thousands of fishermen associated with the Odisha Fishermen Association gathered at Lower PMG square in Bhubaneswar, pressing for a six-point charter of demands, prominently including diesel subsidy.
From various regions such as Paradip, Balasore, Bahabalpur, and Dhamra, hundreds of fishermen converged on the State Capital in the morning to voice their grievances.
Accusations were leveled against the government for allegedly exploiting the fishing community, with demonstrators pointing out that while other states have implemented supportive measures, Odisha has overlooked the needs of its fishermen.
A union leader emphasized the significance of diesel subsidy, a primary demand among others, highlighting that while several states offer this benefit, the Odisha government has yet to follow suit. Despite repeated pleas to the government, their demands have gone unheeded, prompting the mass demonstration.
Warning of further escalation if their demands remain unmet, protesters vowed to continue their agitation until the government addresses their grievances.
One protester expressed concerns about safety, noting the lack of dredging in river mouths, a factor contributing to accidents and loss of lives and property.
Additionally, demands were made for inclusion of fishermen's families in Public Distribution System (PDS) and other social security schemes during fishing bans. Calls for the establishment of a welfare fund for the community underscored the persistent neglect of their welfare by authorities.
