Bargarh Town comes alive: Dhanu Jatra opens with mythical grandeur

Bargarh, Jan 15: Odisha's Bargarh town is set to host the commencement of the world's largest open-air theatre, 'Dhanu Jatra,' starting Monday. The entire town has undergone a vibrant transformation with colorful lights and banners, setting the stage for the 11-day festival.
During the Dhanu Jatra, Bargarh metamorphoses into the sacred city of Mathura, and the nearby Ambapali village takes on the role of the mythological Gopapura. The Jeera River in proximity symbolizes the Yamuna River, and the residents of Bargarh become the subjects of the mythological demon king Kansa during this immersive period.
Elaborate preparations have been made, featuring the completion of Demon King Kansa's Raj Darbar and Ranga Mahal, along with the installation of several arch gates to recreate the ambiance of Kansa's kingdom. Notably, the towering Raj Darbar at Hatapada in Bargarh town stands at an impressive 95 feet in height and spans 45 feet in length.
This grand theatrical spectacle will unfold across 14 different stages strategically constructed throughout the town, covering an extensive area of nearly seven kilometers. The Dhanu Jatra promises a cultural extravaganza, blending myth and performance against the backdrop of Bargarh's transformed landscape.
