Odisha on alert: COVID testing recommended despite no recent cases

Bhubaneswar, Dec 22: The Odisha Health Department on Friday issued advisory urging individuals to undergo a COVID test if they suspect they are experiencing symptoms of the viral disease.
While the state has not reported any COVID cases since December 3, Dr. Niranjan Mishra, Director of the Public Health Department, emphasized the importance of precautionary measures. He particularly recommended testing for individuals, especially the elderly with comorbid conditions, who suspect they may have developed any symptoms of the disease. Dr. Mishra emphasized the ongoing importance of wearing masks.
According to Dr. Mishra, the symptoms of the new variants of COVID closely resemble those of the common cold and seasonal flu and can generally be managed at home. Hospitalization is not deemed necessary, and patients exhibiting symptoms are advised to isolate themselves.
Dr. Mishra assured the public that the Odisha government is closely monitoring the situation, aligning with Central government guidelines, and will take necessary steps as needed. He reassured the availability of sufficient medicines, beds, oxygen, and logistics, alleviating concerns.
Meanwhile, the country's active COVID caseload has risen with the emergence of JN.1, a sub-variant of the BA 2.86 Omicron strain. Health experts link this sub-variant to the surge in COVID cases in the United States, Malaysia, and Singapore.
