Treatment plant to make Daya River pollution-free

Bhubaneswar, Dec 7: On Friday, the state government announced plans to commission a treatment plant aimed at eliminating pollution in the Daya River. The decision was made during a review meeting chaired by V.K. Pandian, the Chairman of 5T and Nabin Odisha, in the capital city today.
The pollution in the Daya River is primarily attributed to the flow of the city's wastewater through the Gangua nullah. In response to this issue, it was decided in the meeting to construct an advanced technology treatment plant at the confluence of the Daya and Gangua rivers. This initiative, led by Watco, aims to purify the water of the Daya River.
The capital city is grappling with worsening pollution in the Daya River due to the dumping of waste and the release of untreated water into stormwater channels, making the Gangua nullah a waterlogging hotspot.
Pandian directed relevant agencies, including the Urban Development Department, BMC, Watco, and the State Pollution Control Board, to take immediate action. Steps will be taken to prevent the release of industrial and biomedical waste into drains.
As part of the decisions made in the meeting, it is now mandatory to connect the contaminated water from various institutions in BMC to the sewerage line. Pandian emphasized creating awareness to facilitate the prompt connection of all houses in BMC to the sewerage line.
Sewerage work is already underway in various areas of Bhubaneswar by Watco. Pandian expressed confidence that with coordinated efforts and expedited sewerage work, the public would not face inconvenience, urging completion within the stipulated time frame.
Given the presence of various industries in Bhubaneswar, regular inspections by IDCO, State Pollution Control Board, and BMC will ensure proper treatment of industrial waste and water.
