Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: A total of 3,453 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) were closed in Odisha during the last five financial years, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Shobha Karandlaje informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to a question by BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra, the Union Minister said that despite the closures, Odisha witnessed robust entrepreneurial growth, with 24.68 lakh MSMEs registering on the Udyam Registration Portal and UAP between 2021-22 and 2025-26.

District-wise data showed that Khordha recorded the highest number of MSME closures at 601 units, followed by Cuttack (293), Ganjam (236), Balasore (212) and Sundargarh (152). Other districts reporting significant closures included Bhadrak, Puri, Angul, Balangir, Bargarh, Jajpur and Kendrapada.

The data also revealed a steady rise in MSME shutdowns over the years. While 118 units closed in 2021-22, the number increased to 212 in 2022-23, 431 in 2023-24, 875 in 2024-25, and surged to 1,817 in 2025-26.

At the same time, Khordha emerged as the leading district in new MSME registrations with around 2.56 lakh units, followed by Cuttack (2.19 lakh) and Ganjam (2.15 lakh). To strengthen the sector, the Centre extended 2.92 lakh credit guarantees worth Rs 34,156 crore to Micro and Small Enterprises in Odisha under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) during the last five years, providing crucial financial support to entrepreneurs across the state.
