Odisha tightens COVID-19 surveillance along Andhra border ahead of Rath Yatra
Bhubaneswar, July 13: The Odisha Government has intensified COVID-19 surveillance in districts bordering Andhra Pradesh following a rise in coronavirus cases in the neighbouring state and reports of two suspected COVID-related deaths in Kadapa. The precautionary measures come ahead of the annual Rath Yatra, when lakhs of devotees are expected to visit Odisha from across the country.
Public Health Director Dr. Rabindranath Mishra said the Health Department is closely monitoring the situation and conducting regular COVID-19 testing across healthcare facilities in the State. He clarified that no positive case has been detected in Odisha so far and appealed to the public not to panic.
"COVID-19 monitoring is continuing across the State, and tests are being conducted regularly. All reports have been negative so far, but we are maintaining strict vigilance," Dr. Mishra said.
In view of the developments in Andhra Pradesh, the Health Department has instructed Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs) of all border districts to strengthen screening at entry points and ensure that every suspected COVID-19 case is tested at district headquarters hospitals.
Special arrangements are also being made for the upcoming Rath Yatra. Officials have been directed to test devotees or visitors exhibiting COVID-like symptoms and manage any suspected cases in accordance with the prescribed public health protocols.
According to reports, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a fresh surge in COVID-19 infections in recent days. Besides the two suspected deaths in Kadapa, the neighbouring state has deployed rapid response teams, intensified surveillance and directed hospitals to keep isolation wards ready to handle any increase in cases.
Health authorities in Odisha have urged citizens to remain cautious, maintain hygiene and cooperate with screening measures while travelling.
