OSEPA issues new timetable for schools under NEP-2020 implementation
Bhubaneswar, June 8: The Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) has released detailed guidelines and a model timetable for all government and government-aided schools from Sishu Vatika (pre-school) to Class VIII for the academic session 2026-27, marking a significant step in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 in the state.
As part of the reforms, the Odisha government has revised its curriculum framework and introduced new textbooks based on the Odisha Curriculum Framework for School Education-2025. The new academic structure aims to make learning more engaging, holistic and student-centric.
One of the key features of the new system is the introduction of 10 bagless days during the academic year. On these days, students will attend school without carrying bags and participate in experiential and activity-based learning programmes designed to reduce academic stress and promote practical skills.
According to the guidelines, schools will function for 230 days annually. Of these, 20 days will be earmarked for examinations, assessments and academic evaluation activities, while another 20 days will be reserved for annual functions, sports meets, cultural events and other co-curricular programmes. The remaining 190 days will be devoted to classroom teaching and learning.
The revised timetable provides for seven periods each working day, amounting to 42 periods per week. Greater emphasis has been placed on Mathematics, Science, Arts Education, Physical Education and Vocational Education. To encourage experiential learning, two extended periods of 80–90 minutes have been incorporated for project work, science experiments, presentations, role plays and practical activities.
For Classes VI to VIII, one vocational education period each week will be designated as a bagless activity day, preferably on Saturdays, in line with NEP-2020’s focus on skill-based and multidisciplinary education.
