No major temperature relief in Odisha for three days, heat and humidity to persist till June 9: IMD
Bhubaneswar, June 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that there will be no significant change in temperatures across Odisha over the next three days, even as hot and humid conditions continue to affect several coastal and adjoining districts till June 9.
According to IMD, a trough line over central India is currently preventing moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal from entering the state. This has reduced atmospheric moisture over Odisha and contributed to a sudden rise in temperatures. The influence of the trough is expected to weaken over the next two to three days, but heat stress conditions are likely to continue for several more days.
While isolated norwester (Kalbaisakhi) thunderstorms may occur at one or two places each day, the IMD said thunderstorm activity is likely to increase from June 11 onward. The department has also indicated the possibility of light rainfall across the state around June 13–14, which could coincide with the onset of the southwest monsoon in Odisha. However, officials said a clearer assessment of monsoon arrival would emerge in the coming days.
Despite Bhubaneswar’s actual maximum temperature being around 41°C, high humidity pushed the heat index or “feels-like” temperature close to 50°C, making outdoor conditions particularly oppressive. The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
