Odisha DGP orders HRPC probe into Ganjam man’s death amid custodial torture allegations
Bhubaneswar, June 1: Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has ordered an inquiry by the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) into the death of a 32-year-old man from Ganjam district following allegations that he was subjected to custodial torture at Kabisuryanagar Police Station.
The deceased, identified as Sushant Sahu of Subulia village, died on Monday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Berhampur. His death has triggered widespread concern and demands for an impartial investigation from family members and local residents.
According to the family, Sushant, a physically challenged daily wage labourer, was detained by police on May 25 in connection with a stone-blasting case. They alleged that he remained in police custody for several days and was handed over to his family on Saturday in a critical condition.
Sushant was initially admitted to a hospital in Aska before being shifted to Berhampur for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
His wife, Mamajin Pardhan, alleged that he was taken into custody following a minor dispute at his workplace and was subjected to severe physical abuse during detention. She claimed that he suffered injuries across his body and alleged that police personnel tortured him for several days before releasing him.
The allegations have sparked public outrage in the area, with residents demanding justice and accountability.
Taking serious note of the matter, DGP Khurania directed the Human Rights Protection Cell to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sushant’s death. The probe will examine both Kabisuryanagar Police Station Case No. 342/2026 and Baidyanathpur Police Station Unnatural Death Case No. 412/2026, which are linked to the incident.
