IMD issues orange warning for Mayurbhanj, yellow alert for 20 Odisha districts
Bhubaneswar, May 11: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj district and yellow warnings for 20 other districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over the next few days.
According to the latest forecast, thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds are very likely to occur during afternoon and evening hours at isolated places across several districts on Tuesday.
The IMD has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj district, where thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph are expected. Meanwhile, yellow warnings have been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph.
The weather office has advised residents to remain alert, avoid open spaces during lightning activity, and take precautionary measures against strong winds.
The IMD further predicted that thunderstorm activity would continue on May 14 and May 15 in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal, all of which have been placed under yellow warning.
Officials said the prevailing weather conditions may lead to temporary disruptions in normal life and urged people to follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
