NHRC seeks report on deadly fire at SCB Medical College
Bhubaneswar, Mar 17: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious note of the tragic fire incident at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, which reportedly claimed 12 lives. The Commission has directed the Odisha government to submit a detailed report within 15 days, highlighting the circumstances that led to the disaster and the measures taken thereafter.
Acting on a complaint filed by Human Rights Front India President Manoj Jena, the NHRC has issued a notice to Chief Secretary Anu Garg. The complaint alleged gross negligence and inadequate fire safety arrangements at the hospital, raising concerns about patient safety in one of the state’s premier healthcare institutions.
The complainant has urged the Commission to recommend compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50 lakh for the injured victims. Taking cognizance of these demands, NHRC member Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi has instructed authorities to provide a comprehensive account of the incident.
The Commission is expected to review the report and determine further action, which may include recommendations for accountability and improved safety measures.
