Bhubaneswar, Jan 29: Purighat police on Wednesday arrested a 36-year-old astrologer for allegedly molesting a woman at her residence in Cuttack, taking advantage of her vulnerable situation. The accused has been identified as Jagannath Nayak, a resident of Biridi area in Jagatsinghpur district.

According to police sources, the woman, who lives in Cuttack’s Santa Sahi locality, had been facing financial difficulties and family-related problems for some time. Worried and distressed, she approached Nayak on the advice of a relative, hoping that he could help ward off evil influences and restore peace in her household.

Nayak allegedly suggested conducting a special ritual to resolve her problems and demanded ₹70,000 for the same. The woman reportedly agreed to the proposal and paid an initial amount of ₹25,000. On Tuesday evening, the accused arrived at her home to perform the ritual and asked that it be conducted in a closed room.

During the ritual, when the woman was alone with him, Nayak allegedly molested her. Her cries alerted family members and neighbours, following which the accused fled the spot. Based on the woman’s complaint, Purighat police registered a case, launched an investigation, and arrested Jagannath Nayak. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
