Police cap Khandagiri Jatra seating at 1,800 to ensure crowd safety
Bhubaneswar, Jan 28: The Commissionerate Police has issued strict safety guidelines for the ongoing Khandagiri Jatra, directing all organising committees to limit seating capacity to a maximum of 1,800 spectators per show. The decision has been taken to ensure crowd safety, effective emergency response and better overall management during the popular cultural festival.
According to the directives issued by Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena, a minimum gap of three feet between seating rows has been made mandatory. In addition, organisers have been instructed to provide wider internal pathways inside the pandals to facilitate smooth movement of spectators and allow quick access for emergency services such as police, fire personnel and ambulances in case of any untoward incident.
The police have clearly stated that all Jatra committees must strictly comply with the prescribed safety norms, warning that stringent action will be initiated against violators. The move is aimed at preventing stampede-like situations and ensuring a safer environment, particularly for women, who often face harassment and discomfort in overcrowded pandals.
However, several Jatra committee members have expressed concern over possible revenue losses due to the reduced seating capacity.
It may be noted that the first phase of the Khandagiri Jatra commenced on January 27 and will continue till February 7. Seven pandals are hosting performances by 15 named opera parties in two phases, with seven jatra troupes performing in the first phase.
