Odisha to begin month-long house listing drive from April 16 for Census 2027
Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: The Odisha government on Tuesday announced a month-long house listing exercise starting from April 16, 2026, as part of preparations for Census 2027. The decision was conveyed through a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
According to the notification, the house listing operation will continue across the state till May 15, 2026. Before the door-to-door survey begins, residents will be given an opportunity for self-enumeration from April 1 to April 15, 2026. During this period, citizens can voluntarily submit their household details online.
Sources in the Census Directorate said this provision will allow people to independently share information, reducing the burden on field enumerators. The census will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will cover house listing, while the second phase, scheduled for February 2027, will involve population enumeration with detailed demographic and socio-economic data collection.
Nearly one lakh enumerators will be deployed across Odisha, each covering about 200 households. Supervisors will monitor six enumerators each. Officials said enumerators will receive an incentive of ₹25,000.
Training programmes have been underway for six months, and pre-test surveys were conducted in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Nearly 90 per cent of data is expected to be collected digitally, marking a major technological shift.
