Wild elephant triggers school closures in Khaira block, panic grips villages
Bhubaneswar, Dec 19: In view of the continued movement of a wild elephant in the Soro–Hati region, the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Khaira block, Narayan Das, has ordered the temporary closure of 10 schools as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident. The schools in Mahatipur, Nuasahi, Shundira Gandibeda, and Anderei villages have been shut following instructions from the District Education Officer.
The decision comes amid heightened tension after the stray elephant reportedly killed an elderly man, identified as Surendra Das, and injured two others in Purbapada village. According to local sources, the pachyderm entered several villages in search of food, creating panic among residents. The animal was also spotted roaming through Notapada and Bateswar villages, where it damaged trees and chased villagers, forcing people to remain indoors.
After receiving information, officials from the Kupari and Oupada forest ranges rushed to the area and launched efforts to drive the elephant back into the forest. Despite these measures, fear continues to grip the region as the animal is still believed to be in nearby areas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with forest officials until the situation normalises.
