VSSUT Burla student arrested for allegedly assaulting female classmate; sent to judicial custody
Bhubaneswar, Dec 5: A final-year BTech student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a female classmate late on Thursday night. The incident came to light after the survivor filed a formal complaint at the Burla police station, leading to swift action by the authorities. Both the accused and the victim are in their final year of studies at the institution.
According to the complaint, the assault took place at a rented accommodation where the accused student was residing. The victim alleged that she was physically attacked and subjected to mental harassment. She further accused him of attempting to extort money from her, adding another serious dimension to the case.
Based on these allegations, the police registered a case and arrested the student. His bail plea was rejected in court, following which he was remanded to judicial custody and subsequently shifted to Sambalpur Circle Jail.
Meanwhile, VSSUT authorities had already suspended the accused soon after the incident surfaced. The university administration has now referred the matter to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) for a detailed investigation, ensuring that due process is followed in handling the allegations.
