Son allegedly sets mother on fire over denial of money for liquor in Bhadrak; woman critical
Bhubaneswar, Dec 4: In a horrifying incident that has shocked the residents of Galaganda village under Tihidi police limits in Bhadrak district, a 45-year-old man allegedly set his mother on fire after she refused to give him money to buy liquor. The incident occurred around 8 am, sending shockwaves through the otherwise quiet village.
According to local reports, the accused, Debashish Nayak, is known in the area for his habitual substance abuse. On Wednesday morning, an argument broke out when he demanded money from his mother, Jyotsnarani Nayak, aged 65. When she declined, Debashish reportedly assaulted her and, in a fit of rage, poured petrol over her before setting her ablaze. The elderly woman collapsed on the ground as the flames engulfed her.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to rescue her from the blaze. She was immediately taken to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. As her health worsened, doctors referred her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Police have begun an investigation into the incident, and further action is expected based on the victim’s condition and witness statements.
