KIIT first-year student found dead in hostel; Infocity Police suspect suicide

Bhubaneswar, Dec 1: A first-year Computer Science student of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a hostel on the university campus in Bhubaneswar. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Yadav, a native of Chhattisgarh, who had recently joined the institute to pursue his B.Tech degree.

According to initial reports, hostel authorities discovered Rahul unresponsive in his room and immediately alerted the Infocity Police. Investigators suspect it to be a case of suicide, although the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after a detailed post-mortem examination. Police have begun a formal investigation and are examining possible reasons behind the incident, including academic pressure, mental health issues, or personal distress. Statements from hostel inmates, friends, and staff are being collected as part of the inquiry.

This is not the first such tragedy reported from KIIT. Earlier, on February 16, 2025, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal, was found dead in her hostel room, sparking widespread protests from students and renewed demands for greater safety and counselling support on campus.
