Jharsuguda records coldest november in 71 years at 8.1°C
Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: Jharsuguda district has witnessed an exceptional drop in temperature this season, marking its coldest November in 71 years. The mercury dipped to 8.1°C, surpassing the previous record of 8.4°C recorded on November 30, 1970.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das shared these rare climatological insights, noting that the district had earlier experienced other notable lows—8.6°C on November 26, 1970, 8.9°C on November 29, 1970, and 9°C on November 25, 1970. The data was shared by the IMD scientist on his official X handle.
The fresh plunge in temperature signals the strong return of winter to Odisha, following a brief period of mild weather. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave conditions are likely to persist, particularly in interior and southern Odisha. Night temperatures are expected to remain below 15°C on Thursday and Friday across most regions.
However, the intense chill may ease soon. The IMD has predicted a gradual rise in night temperatures by 2 to 3°C over the subsequent five days, offering some relief to residents experiencing the season’s sharp cold spell.
