Bhubaneswar, Nov 13: In a tragic incident from Mayurbhanj district, a college student allegedly attempted suicide after being scolded by her mother over academic issues. The incident took place at Manatapal village under Betnoti police limits on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Laxmimani Murmu, a Plus-III final-year student of Mahatma Gandhi Degree College in Baisinga. According to preliminary police reports, Laxmimani’s mother, Balmhi Murmu, had reprimanded her for neglecting her studies. The verbal altercation reportedly left the young girl deeply upset. Moments later, she locked herself in her room and attempted to hang herself.

Family members discovered her in a critical condition and immediately rushed her to Betnoti Community Health Centre. After initial treatment, doctors referred her to the District Headquarters Hospital in Baripada due to the severity of her condition.

Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident. The case has once again highlighted the growing emotional distress among students and the importance of mental health awareness and communication within families.
