Woman suffers 75% burns as firecracker explosion destroys house in Cuttack
Bhubaneswar, Nov 12: In a tragic incident, a 33-year-old woman sustained severe burn injuries after firecrackers exploded at a house in Natakai village under Nischintakoili block of Cuttack district on Wednesday.
According to reports, the mishap occurred at the residence of Bhagyadhar Mallick, a well-known firecracker maker in the locality. A sudden explosion took place while firecrackers were being prepared or stored, triggering a massive fire that engulfed the entire house. The blast left Prabhasini Mallick, a family member, with nearly 75% burn injuries, while the house was completely reduced to ashes.
On being alerted, Fire Department personnel rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after a strenuous effort, preventing it from spreading to nearby houses.
The injured woman was initially taken to the Nischintakoili Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment but was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as her condition worsened.
Local authorities have launched an inquiry into the cause of the explosion, amid concerns over the unsafe storage of firecrackers in residential areas.
