Man missing after being swept away in swollen river in Gajapati
Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: Panic gripped Bhalia Sahi village in Rayagada block after a man went missing on Thursday, having been swept away by strong river currents swollen due to heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Montha.
The missing person has been identified as Bhim Munda, a local resident who was reportedly trying to cross the river to reach Nuasahi village to purchase essential items. As per eyewitness accounts, he lost balance midway and was carried away by the surging waters. His whereabouts remain unknown despite continuous search efforts.
Local residents initially launched a rescue operation but were unable to trace him. Later, Fire Service personnel and ODRAF teams were deployed to intensify the search. Rescue teams are using boats and ropes to navigate the turbulent waters, though strong currents have made operations challenging.
Bhim’s family, including his young daughter, has been waiting by the riverbank, clutching his belongings in despair. The incident has once again sparked demands for a permanent bridge across the river, a long-pending necessity for residents who risk their lives crossing it during monsoon months.
