Mahendragiri reopens for tourists after week-long closure over landslide fears
Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: The district administration on Saturday reopened Mahendragiri, one of Odisha’s most popular hill destinations, after it remained closed for a week due to safety concerns following Cyclone Montha.
The picturesque site, known for its scenic views and mythological significance, had been shut from October 25, 2025, amid fears of possible landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the aftermath of the cyclone. Authorities had restricted entry to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure visitor safety.
With weather conditions improving and no further risk of landslides reported, the Gajapati district administration has decided to lift the restrictions. Along with Mahendragiri, all local waterfalls and nearby tourist spots that were temporarily closed have also been reopened to the public.
Officials have urged visitors to remain cautious and adhere to safety protocols while exploring hilly and slippery areas. “The safety of tourists remains our top priority. We welcome visitors back but advise them to follow all guidelines during their visit,” said a district tourism officer. The reopening has brought relief to local traders and guides who rely on tourism for their livelihood.
