Bhubaneswar, Oct 9: Tragedy struck Chandnabadi village under Chikiti block in Ganjam district after two women, who suffered severe burns in a gas cylinder explosion, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

The deceased have been identified as Hemlata Behera and S. Rebati Reddy. According to reports, the fire broke out in Rebati’s house on Wednesday when a gas leak is suspected to have triggered an explosion. Hemlata, who was visiting Rebati at the time, was also caught in the flames.

Hearing their cries for help, family members and neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to rescue both women. They were initially taken to a local hospital and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, Hemlata succumbed on Wednesday, followed by Rebati on Thursday morning.

The incident has plunged the local community into grief. The local MLA expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and urged residents to handle LPG connections with caution to prevent such unfortunate accidents in the future.
