Wild elephant found dead in Deogarh’s Reamal forest range; electrocution suspected

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8: A wild elephant was found dead at Kaunsitaila village under the Tinkbir beat of the Reamal forest range in Deogarh district, sparking concern among locals and forest officials. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when villagers spotted the carcass and immediately informed the forest department.
Preliminary reports suggest that the elephant, which had been damaging crops in the surrounding farmlands for the past few days, may have come into contact with a live electric wire installed by villagers to protect their fields. Officials suspect that the electrocution occurred late at night, leading to the animal’s death on the spot.
Upon receiving the information, Reamal Range Officer Niranjan Dharua and Forester Pradeep Satapathy rushed to the site and began an investigation into the incident. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death.
The tragic sight of the elephant’s carcass drew a large crowd of villagers, reflecting deep concern over frequent human-elephant conflicts in the region. Forest officials have urged locals to avoid illegal electric fencing and assured that further details will be shared after the post-mortem report.
