Odisha STA cracks down on illegal “DJ vehicles”
Bhubaneswar, Sept 17: The Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) has issued a strong warning and launched a statewide crackdown on illegally modified vehicles, popularly known as “DJ vehicles,” that are being widely used in weddings, processions, and public events.
According to the STA, the increasing number of such vehicles has raised serious concerns, as they often undergo hazardous structural modifications and are fitted with unauthorized sound and light systems. Vans, buses, and trailers have been found altered with high-wattage speakers, amplifiers, laser beams, and neon lights—clear violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
Officials highlighted that many of these vehicles exceed legal limits for height, width, and overhang, compromising stability and maneuverability. The installation of powerful LED and laser lights also creates visibility hazards, distracting other drivers and breaching AIS-008 safety standards.
Excessive use of high-decibel audio systems further worsens the situation by drowning out crucial auditory signals such as ambulance sirens or train horns. Moreover, tinted films, banners, and decorative curtains often obstruct driver visibility, increasing accident risks, particularly on dark rural roads.
The STA has urged district enforcement officials to take strict action to ensure road safety.
