Elephant critically injured after train collision in Sundargarh, rescue efforts underway

Bhubaneswar, Sept 4: A tragic incident was reported from Rajgangpur forest range in Sundargarh district, where a wild elephant sustained severe injuries after being hit by a train. The mishap occurred between Sonakhani and Sagara railway stations, a stretch often frequented by elephants moving across forested corridors.
Preliminary reports suggest that the elephant was attempting to cross the railway track when it was struck by a passing train. The impact left the animal critically injured, sparking concern among forest officials and wildlife lovers. Upon receiving the information, teams from the Railways and Forest Department rushed to the spot and began an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
A special rescue team led by the Rourkela Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) has also reached the location. However, officials admitted that the rescue operation poses a major challenge due to the difficult terrain, with steep hills on both sides and the railway line running through the middle.
Efforts are now being made to provide immediate medical attention to the elephant and ensure its safe relocation. Authorities have assured that every possible step will be taken to save the injured jumbo.
