Heavy inflow into Hirakud Dam, 12 gates opened to release excess water

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: Continuous heavy rainfall in the upper catchments of the Mahanadi River has led to a significant rise in water inflow into the Hirakud Dam, prompting authorities to open 12 sluice gates to regulate the reservoir level. Of these, eight gates have been opened on the left bank and four on the right, allowing excess water to be safely discharged downstream.
According to officials, the water level at the dam’s reservoir has reached 621.69 feet, which is close to its maximum capacity of 630 feet. The dam is currently receiving an inflow of 2,13,627 cusecs, while the discharge has been recorded at 2,24,670 cusecs through the gates, canals, and powerhouses.
Dam engineers and the Water Resources Department are closely monitoring the situation, maintaining round-the-clock vigilance to ensure the safety of both the dam structure and downstream regions. Residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahanadi and its distributaries have been advised to remain cautious as water levels in rivers are expected to rise further.
Authorities have confirmed that water discharge will continue until the reservoir returns to a safe and sustainable level.
