Odisha Govt to provide free uniforms and essentials to 3.1 lakh Shishu Vatika students

Bhubaneswar, Aug 19: In a significant move to strengthen early childhood education and curb dropout rates, the Odisha government has announced free uniforms and essential items for over 3.10 lakh children enrolled in Shishu Vatika centres across the state.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond made the announcement on Tuesday, highlighting that Shishu Vatika, a pre-primary initiative, has been set up in nearly 45,000 primary schools across Odisha. The programme is designed to prepare children for formal schooling by instilling learning habits from an early age.
“To encourage regular attendance and ensure a child-friendly environment, the government will provide each child with uniforms, shoes, socks, and track pants,” the minister said. A budgetary allocation of ₹1,000 per child has been made for this initiative.
Gond emphasized that the scheme is part of the government’s long-term strategy to build strong foundational learning. “If children happily attend school and build a routine, chances of dropping out later are reduced,” he added.
The School and Mass Education Department expects this initiative to boost enrolment, improve retention, and create a positive start for young learners.
