Pipili woman dies after self-immolation attempt in Puri district

Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: A tragic incident was reported from Pipili in Puri district, where a woman who had attempted self-immolation on August 13 succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday.
According to police, the woman set herself on fire at Jaypur Chowk in Pipili by pouring kerosene over her body. Locals immediately rescued her and rushed her to the Pipili Community Health Centre (CHC). As her condition worsened due to severe burn injuries, she was later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Despite intensive medical treatment, she breathed her last six days after the incident.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman was under severe debt-related stress, which might have pushed her to take the extreme step. A suicide note and a kerosene bottle were recovered from the scene, strengthening the suspicion of financial distress.
Doctors confirmed that the woman had sustained 80–90% burn injuries and was placed on ventilator support. Police officials had tried to record her statement on Sunday night, but her condition prevented her from speaking.
The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) has confirmed that further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
