Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: A well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, extending across north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours. It is likely to cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts around forenoon on August 19, 2025.

Under the influence of the system, several districts in Odisha are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. IMD has issued a red warning for Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangapur, predicting isolated extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at 30–40 kmph.

An orange warning has been sounded for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kandhamal, where heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely.

A yellow alert has been issued for a wide range of districts, including Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sonepur. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.

On August 20, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely in Nabarangapur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balangir, and Rayagada, all under yellow warning. Additionally, coastal and several interior districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati, will also witness thunderstorm activity under yellow alert.

For August 21, IMD has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at one or two places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts. These areas remain under a yellow warning.
