Snakebite victim’s family donates organs, saves three lives in Nayagarh

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: In a heartwarming act of humanity, the family of a 49-year-old woman who succumbed to a snakebite chose to donate her organs, giving new life to three individuals in critical need. The incident took place in Nayagarh district, Odisha.

The woman, identified as Kuntala Nanda of Gaudiapada village under Ranpur block, was bitten by a venomous snake on August 29. Initially, she was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Nayagarh. As her condition worsened, she was referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.

Despite all efforts, Kuntala was declared brain dead by the doctors at AIIMS. At this crucial moment of grief, her family displayed extraordinary compassion and agreed to donate her organs. On Wednesday, her kidneys and liver were successfully harvested and transplanted into three patients who had been battling life-threatening illnesses.

Her noble gesture has drawn widespread admiration across the state. The lives saved by this selfless act stand as a living tribute to her memory.

Kuntala’s mortal remains will be brought back to her native village, where her final rites will be performed with full state honours as a mark of respect.
