Odisha allows women to work night shifts with safety measures in place

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: In a progressive move aimed at empowering women in the workforce, the Odisha Labour Department has issued a notification permitting women to work night shifts in industrial and commercial establishments—provided they offer written consent.
As per the revised guidelines under the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, women can now work night shifts if at least three female employees are present during the shift and a female supervisor is appointed to oversee their work. This comes after the removal of Clause 23, which previously restricted female employment during night hours.
To ensure safety, employers must provide GPS-enabled transport with drivers who have undergone police verification or arrange safe accommodation close to the workplace. The premises must be well-lit and equipped with CCTV surveillance for added security.
Workplaces are also mandated to provide clean drinking water, hygienic washrooms, and display emergency contact numbers such as the state women’s helpline (181) and Labour Department helpline (1800-345-6703). These numbers must also be visible inside the vehicles used for employee transport.
The move is expected to enhance career flexibility and job opportunities for women in Odisha.
