CCTV footage emerges in FM College student Soumyashree Bisi’s self-immolation case; two more arrested

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: In a major development in the tragic self-immolation case of Fakir Mohan College student Soumyashree Bisi, investigators have obtained crucial CCTV footage that could shed light on the sequence of events. The footage, dated July 12 at 10:44 AM, reportedly shows Soumyashree riding her bicycle to a nearby petrol pump to purchase petrol—just hours before she set herself ablaze.
Sources confirmed that the video was captured from a CCTV camera installed on the route between FM College and Chandipur. It is believed to support claims that Soumyashree had pre-planned the act after being upset over inaction on her harassment complaint.
Soumyashree, a second-year Integrated B.Ed student, had accused the Head of the Department, Samira Kumar Sahu, of harassment. Frustrated by the college authorities' alleged negligence, she immolated herself in front of the principal’s office. She sustained over 95% burns and died two days later at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
The Odisha Crime Branch, which is investigating the case, has not yet issued an official statement on the footage. However, they are verifying its authenticity. Following earlier arrests of the HoD and principal, two students have now also been arrested, bringing the total number of accused to four.
