Soumyashree Bisi’s brother files police complaint over offensive social media posts

Bhubaneswar, July 17: In the aftermath of the tragic death of Soumyashree Bisi, a student of FM College who succumbed to severe burn injuries after allegedly facing mental and sexual harassment by a college lecturer, her brother has filed a police complaint at Bhogarai police station. The complaint is against four individuals accused of making objectionable and offensive posts on social media targeting Soumyashree’s family.
According to the complainant, the social media posts were deeply hurtful and added to the family's trauma, prompting him to demand strict legal action against those responsible. Bhogarai police have reportedly taken the complaint seriously and have begun a formal investigation.
Soumyashree, a 20-year-old student, had set herself on fire on the college campus on July 12. She sustained 95 percent burn injuries and was immediately shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she passed away on Monday night.
Her final rites were conducted in her native village in Bhograi, Balasore district, on Tuesday. The incident has triggered statewide protests, leading to the arrest of the college principal and the HOD. The Higher Education Department has also suspended them from their posts.
