Flood situation in Odisha under control, says Water Resources Department

Bhubaneswar, July 5: The flood situation in Odisha remains under control, with all major river systems flowing below the danger mark, confirmed Water Resources Department Chief Engineer Chandrasekhar Padhi. Addressing the media, Padhi assured that despite recent rainfall and rising water levels, there is no immediate threat of flooding across the state.
He stated that the water level in the Hirakud reservoir is gradually rising following the opening of the Kalama gate. “Tomorrow, six more sluice gates will be opened after performing necessary rituals. The decision to release additional water will depend on the inflow from the Ib and other rivers,” he added.
In southern Odisha, key rivers continue to maintain safe levels. The Rushikulya River at Purusottampur is currently flowing 5 meters below the danger mark, and the Bansadhara River is also at a low level. The Indravati reservoir, meanwhile, is filled to just 30% of its capacity.
Padhi also highlighted that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not forecast any heavy rainfall for the coming week, providing further relief. However, authorities are maintaining strict surveillance and are fully prepared to respond to any potential developments.
