DNA tests ordered in Gopalpur gangrape case, Crime Branch intensifies probe

Bhubaneswar, June 19: The Odisha Crime Branch has intensified its investigation into the horrific Gopalpur gangrape case by collecting DNA samples from all 10 accused individuals. These tests are expected to play a crucial role in verifying their involvement. The samples were taken on Thursday as part of the ongoing forensic examination process.
In parallel, the investigating officers carried out an extensive interrogation of the survivor’s male friend, who was present during the incident. He was questioned for over an hour at the Gopalpur Police Station to establish the exact sequence of events and understand any possible motives. After detailed questioning, he was allowed to leave.
On Wednesday, senior Crime Branch officials, including the Inspector General, visited the crime scene at Gopalpur beach to inspect and review key evidence.
The case, involving the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old woman by three members of a 10-member group, has sparked public outrage. The Odisha DGP, YB Khurania, has labeled it a ‘Red Flag’ case due to its seriousness and handed over the investigation to the CID Crime Branch. Four minors are among those arrested.
