Ten arrested in Gajapati for alleged lynching of suspected sexual assailant

Bhubaneswar, June 10: Ten individuals, comprising eight women and two men, have been arrested in a village under Mohana police limits for allegedly murdering a 60-year-old man accused of serially sexually assaulting multiple women. Police reported the man was killed on the night of June 3, shortly after he allegedly raped a 52-year-old widow in the community.
Following this latest alleged assault, a group of women, many of whom had reportedly been victims of the same man's repeated sexual assaults, convened a meeting and collectively decided to take matters into their own hands.
Basant Sethi, Inspector-in-Charge of Mohana police station, stated, "They went to his house at night while he was asleep. The 52-year-old widow attacked him with a sharp weapon, assisted by other survivors. Two men from the village also helped in the act."
Sethi revealed that the deceased, a widower for the past four years, had allegedly sexually assaulted numerous women in the village during this period. "At least six of the arrested women have admitted to being victims of his repeated assaults," he added.
