IAS officer's health worsens in custody amidst bribery scandal

Bhubaneswar, June 10: The health condition of Dhiman Chakma, a 2021-batch IAS officer and Sub-Collector of Dharmagarh, has reportedly taken a turn for the worse after he was remanded to judicial custody. Chakma's arrest on charges of bribery has led to significant concerns regarding his well-being while incarcerated.
The young administrative officer was apprehended by the Vigilance department for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a local businessman. The swift action saw Chakma caught red-handed at his official residence, a development that sent shockwaves through the local administration.
Sources close to the matter indicate that Chakma is now grappling with severe depression, necessitating his placement under constant observation within the jail's medical ward. This measure has been taken for both security and immediate medical attention. The investigation into the case has also revealed a substantial recovery of Rs 47 lakh from his residence during subsequent searches, further deepening the legal troubles for the detained officer.
Following his arrest and initial processing, Chakma was kept isolated from other inmates, a precaution taken given the high-profile nature of his case and his reported deteriorating mental state.
