Vigilance raids uncover crores in cash, property, and investments linked to Odisha Chief Engineer

Bhubaneswar, May 30: In a major development, the Odisha Vigilance Department has uncovered assets worth several crores during raids on properties linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer (Plan Roads), RW Department, Bhubaneswar.
The raids, carried out at seven locations across Angul, Bhubaneswar, and Pipili (Puri), were prompted by allegations of disproportionate assets beyond Sarangi’s known sources of income.
During the ongoing investigation, Vigilance officials seized Rs 2.52 crores in cash, hidden at various locations including a carton. They also uncovered investments worth approximately Rs 2.70 crores in the share market. The searches led to the discovery of two double-storeyed buildings in Angul, two flats—one measuring 1530 sq ft at PDN Exotica in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar, and another measuring 1100 sq ft in Siula, Pipili (Puri). In addition, seven high-value plots located around Bhubaneswar and Angul were found, along with bank and insurance deposits totaling Rs 1.5 crores.
Authorities also seized a Maruti Swift ZXI vehicle and identified one locker at Axis Bank in Angul registered in the name of Sarangi’s wife, which remains to be opened.
Sarangi’s government service career began humbly as a Stipendiary Engineer in the Panchayati Raj Department, with a consolidated salary of Rs 2,000 per month. Initially posted at Kaniha Block, he gained extensive experience in various blocks of Odisha until July 1999. His career advanced steadily: he was regularized as an Assistant Engineer on October 15, 1999, and later served in multiple PWD and RD divisions across the state. Promoted to Assistant Executive Engineer in 2014 and Executive Engineer in 2016, Sarangi took charge of RD Division in Deogarh. His ascent continued with his appointment as Additional Chief Engineer in January 2023, culminating in his promotion to Chief Engineer in February 2025.
