Diploma student dies by suicide after losing money in online game in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 28: In a heartbreaking incident, a second-year diploma student allegedly died by suicide after losing a substantial amount of money in an online game. The deceased, identified as Sahil Jena, was the only son of Umakant Jena from Bangari village under Kudanagari police station limits in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.
Sahil, who was studying at a private college in Bhubaneswar, had come home for vacation. During this period, he reportedly became addicted to online gaming. According to sources, after suffering heavy financial losses, he consumed pesticide—allegedly out of fear and anxiety over how his family would react.
After discovering his condition, his family rushed him to Patakura hospital. He was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment. However, Sahil succumbed to the poisoning on the way.
The tragic incident has devastated Sahil’s family, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their only child. It has also sparked growing concerns over the dangers of online gaming addiction and the urgent need for mental health support and awareness among students and families alike.
