Southwest monsoon arrives early in Odisha, heavy rain predicted

Bhubaneswar, May 28: After weeks of scorching heat and sweltering temperatures, Odisha received much-needed relief as the southwest monsoon arrived in the state on Wednesday, ahead of its usual schedule. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the monsoon has advanced into parts of southern Odisha, bringing showers and cooler conditions.
According to IMD, the monsoon has fully covered Malkangiri and Koraput districts and has partially entered Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Gajapati districts. IMD scientist Umashankar Das shared the update on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “Southwest Monsoon winds have advanced into some areas of South Odisha today.”
Interestingly, this year’s monsoon onset in Odisha is earlier than average. Historically, the monsoon had reached Odisha as early as May 28 in 1999 and May 25 in 2009.
Meanwhile, a well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the Odisha coast. The system is expected to move northwards and may intensify into a depression within 24 hours, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and winds up to 50–60 km/h.
The IMD has issued alerts, and the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has asked all district collectors to remain on high alert and take preventive measures.
