Man arrested in Goa for brutal murder of elderly villager in Odisha’s Kalahandi

Bhubaneswar, May 28: In a shocking incident, police on Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old man from Goa for the gruesome murder of a 65-year-old villager in Depur, under Kalahandi Sadar tehsil in Odisha's Kalahandi district. The accused, identified as Lingaraja Majhi of Depur village, allegedly killed Roop Singh Majhi on May 18 following an undisclosed altercation.
According to sources, after committing the murder, Lingaraja carried the victim’s body on his shoulders to the village pond. In a horrifying turn, he reportedly severed the head and buried both the torso and head separately underwater in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Following a missing person report filed by Roop Singh’s family at Kalampur police station, an investigation was launched. Lingaraja was traced to Goa and arrested. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and led the police to the pond during a reconstruction of the crime.
A joint team from Junagarh, Jaipatna, and Kalampur police stations, supported by the Balangir Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire personnel, recovered the victim’s body. However, the search for the severed head continues.
